Being Their Source of Knowledge

This weekend I was sitting at the top of Table Mountain, pointing out some landmarks to my oldest two, and I wondered how much longer they'll consider me to be one of their main sources of knowledge.

I seem to remember developing an oversized view of my own knowledge and underestimating that of my parents very early on in my teens, and I'm guessing the same will happen to my boys very soon.

Maybe that's when I'll start to shift to imparting more "wisdom" and less "knowledge" - helping them not just know the world, but understand it and their part in it.

(I guess I'll have to develop an ability to speak like Yoda, which will definitely family members annoy not.)

That being said, I refuse to be the middle-aged person who suddenly stops learning and growing. I refuse to plateau at forty - I'm going to keep up with modern tech, modern culture and modern thinking as much as possible!

So maybe there's still going to be a lot left to teach my boys for the foreseeable future. I'm going to enjoy saying, "I may have taught you everything you know, but it's not everything I know!"
