To My Son, on His 3rd Birthday

The Neutron. Boy 2.0. Eli Jakkal. Eli Jack Jack.

I have a question for my boy: Could you be ANY more stubborn?

You have the remarkable ability to find a way to be defiant at every turn. Don't get me wrong - you do what you're supposed to eventually, but it gets done in your way. Your mom and I have realised that it's just easier to convince you that whatever we need you to do is your idea, because that's the way we can unlock your enthusiasm and vigour.

"Not today", "No thanks", "I can't", are your favourite phrases, except when we tell you can't do something. Then your favourite response is, of course, "I can".

It's infuriating.

That being said, a friend of mine recently told me that all the personality traits of our children that annoy us when they are toddlers are the things that are going to lead them to success. If that's true, you show all the traits of a someone who is going to do something great. After all, you don't take no for an answer, you work well independently and love blazing your own trails.

And to add to all of that, you got charm oozing out of your ears.

So...don't change, my boy. But maybe you could listen to daddy a little bit more?

Since it's you're 3rd birthday, here's some of things I want to remember about 3 year old Eli:

  • You LOVE digging sand, and playing with digging related toys

  • Your favourite songs are "Place for My Head" by Linkin Park and "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson

  • You go nuts for a bowl of popcorn

  • You can sit a watch a whole movie with your dad. (You totally didn't watch Speed with him...)

  • You call banana loaf, "banana loof" and it is the CUTEST

  • Your favourite joke involves saying, "Bum" in random sentences

  • You insist on having your shoes on all the time

  • You still need a proper mommy cuddle every now and then
