One of the biggest challenges I face in my modern parenting journey is the idea that I can't dictate who my children will become - rather, my job is to help them become the best version of themselves.
How are we supposed to start a little kid on that road, when they don't know anything about life, let alone who they are now or who they will want to be when they are grown up?
Obviously, there are many tips and tools, but I'd like to take a look at something that we may take for granted, since it's probably been such a ubiquitous part of our childhood and definitely a big part of our children's: LEGO® bricks™.
We know that these bricks bring out our children's creativity - but there are so many other benefits too. LEGO play™ encourages teamwork, communication, conflict resolution and problem solving skills. Beyond that – LEGO play™ allows our children to see themselves as all the different people they could become.
Maybe they've never thought of themselves as a teacher, or ballet dancer, or biker or even someone that has a different look to what they have right now - but with LEGO® bricks™, they can create a world where they can be all of those things and so much more.
Check out this video of the boys and I having some creative fun with the LEGO® set we received from LEGO South Africa™:
