Beating the Man Flu

[Sponsored by Linctagon]

If you have been following AfroDaddy for a while, you’ll know that I really do try to be an engaged father. After all, fatherhood is a privilege and a responsibility that I take very seriously.

Another thing I used to be proud of was my kick-ass immune system. I know - that’s a seriously weird flex, considering I generally had nothing to do with how strong my immune system was. Also, it really wasn’t put to the test in a major way, until I had kids.

Here’s the thing: if you want to bombard your body with all sorts of illnesses, just send your kid to preschool and they’ll come home with a great assortment for you. And when they are sick, it’s like all they want to do is transport their germs directly into your body. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been sneezed and coughed on over the past few years, not to mention the glorious moments when a kid actively directs a nasal projection straight into my eyeball.

Even if you give them Linctagon C Junior to ward off the runny noses that you will inevitably use your sleeve to wipe, the little buggers are great carriers too.

Unfortunately, even though my immune system has been under near constant attack since I’ve become a dad, I’m not allowed to get sick. Like I said, I'm a proudly engaged father and that doesn’t stop if I get the sniffles.

Even if I really want to.

Part of the problem is that I’m the last person in my house to get sick - so after wiping noses and giving cuddles and making tea for a few days, I get the worst of it just as the rest of the family are recovering - which is still a time that needs me to be on point. And even on the rare occasions when I’m the only one that’s sick, young kids don’t quite understand the concept of “dad is not available right now”.

They still need to be fed and dressed and entertained, so I can’t let the effects of a cold or flu attack last for too long, since the amount of time I’m allowed to feel sorry for myself is pretty much zero. That’s why we keep a well-stocked kit of Linctagon remedies in the house, firstly to boost my immune system before the illness hits, and then to reduce the symptoms of colds and flu so I can keep functioning as a father!

Long story short - there’s no time or space for Man Flu in the AfroDaddy household!
